Situated in the verdant, some might say hidden, Vale of Lorton, a warm welcome awaits visitors to the seventeenth century Wheatsheaf Inn. Blessed with panoramic views of some of the finest Lakeland fells, Whinlatter, Hobcarton, Hopegill Head, Whiteside and Grassmoor, The Wheatsheaf is in a truly idyllic location. Landlord Mark Cockbain may sometimes be found staring into the River Cocker just across the tiny lane from the pub scanning the depths for salmon and trout whilst at the same time absorbing the peace and tranquillity along with the intoxicating fresh air.

As well as offering a choice of real ales brewed by the local Jennings Brothers Brewery, The Wheatsheaf has an excellent reputation for its restaurant and menu. Mark and partner Jackie make children most welcome and dogs are allowed in the bar (as long as they are on a lead). The bar, quaint and cosy, warmed by a roaring open fire, resembles in decor and through the collected books and artefacts, a gamekeepers lodge. "We have many farmers and local folk come in and we like them to feel at home,” says Jackie. "The non-smoking restaurant area, also with an open fire, is suited to those who may want to dress up, though you can be as formal or informal as you like." The relaxed atmosphere at The Wheatsheaf will make leaving difficult and you will not be rushed: more likely engaged in a friendly conversation with madcap Jackie or the cheery Mark, or maybe one of the jocular Cumbrian characters around the bar (are they planted by the tourist board?).

Extensive grounds back onto The Wheatsheaf including an enclosed beer garden with spectacular views, ideal for visitors with small children requiring a high level of security. There is a large car park and also camping and caravan facilities.

Mark and Jackie embody the 'spirit' of The Wheatsheaf. It would be a shame to miss out in the chance to have a chat with them. Come and see them.
